ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF sophomore Kia Bright was named the American Athletic Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. The Jacksonville, Fla., native earned her first and the team's second weekly honor of the season following a commanding performance over the weekend.
I'm glad Kia was honored this week for her contributions toward the wins, UCF head coach Todd Dagenais said. I feel like Kia has had a few weekends where she's had the type of performances that were Player of the Week worthy. She continues to be a very important part of our offense. I think the setters did a terrific job of making sure that Kia got the right balls at the right time in the right locations.
Bright had a complete weekend as she helped UCF sweep Temple and UConn. She led the team with 14 kills and hit .462 against Temple, posting her third double-double of the season with a team-high 15 digs. Against UConn, she hit .333 and served up an ace while again leading the Knights with 14 digs. On the weekend, she tallied a team-high 26.5 points and 29 digs and was one shy of leading the team in kills. She hit .409 for the weekend and recorded the match-winning kill on Sunday.
In addition to Bright's honor, senior middle blocker Kaye-Alese Green was named to the conference's weekly honor roll. The Jacksonville, Fla., native was a force at the net, leading the Knights with eight blocks. Averaging 1.33 blocks per set on the weekend, she posted a team-high five blocks in the sweep of UConn on Sunday.
With back-to-back sweeps this weekend, the Knights improved to 11-5 overall. Standing at 4-0 in The American, UCF became the last team undefeated in conference action.
UCF Volleyball, which is presented by Radisson - UCF Area, returns to action Wednesday when the Knights travel down I-4 to take on in-state rival USF at 7 p.m.
