ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Following an impressive outing last weekend, the UCF volleyball team will hold its second Black and Gold Scrimmage of the fall Saturday afternoon at The Venue at UCF. The event, which is slated for 1 p.m., is free of charge, with free parking available in parking garage F.
The Black and Gold Scrimmage will serve as the finale to the Knights' preseason training camp, which consisted of two-a-day practices over a two-week span to prepare the squad for its season-opener vs. Valparaiso on Aug. 30.
This is our final tune up before we hit the court for keeps, head coach Todd Dagenais said. Volleyball doesn't allow preseason matches against other opponents so we have to find a way to sharpen the saw ourselves. It also gives our entire support staff one final dress rehearsal in terms of marketing, event management, and game day logistics.
In its first Black and Gold Scrimmage of the preseason, the Black defeated the Gold squad, 3-1 (27-29, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20). Team Gold took the first set, but Black was able to rally and take the next three sets and win the match.
During the match, junior outside hitter Ashley Gialenios led all hitters with 26 kills. Fellow junior Delaina Sarden was quietly dominant in the middle with 17 kills, seven combined blocks and a .368 attack percentage.
The Knights open the 2013 season Aug. 30-31 when they host the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Invitational at The Venue. During the event, UCF will take on North Florida, Alabama State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
