DeLAND, Fla. - Stetson spoiled the homecoming of DeLand, Fla., native Kim Clonan with a 3-0 sweep of UCF. The loss snapped a winning streak of 37 consecutive wins over Stetson, dating back to 1988. Stetson improves to 8-11 overall and 4-5 in the league while UCF falls to 8-12 and 5-4 in the league.
UCF saw Stetson seize momentum early, taking a 9-3 lead and continued to pull away from the Golden Knights in the first game. The Hatters held the Knights to just 11 kills while racking up 21 and hitting .341 in the opening game. Amanda Stoutjesdyk recorded four kills in the opening game for the Knights.
Stetson opened the second game with an 8-1 run and built the lead to 20-11. From there, the Knights went on a furious rally to close the gap. Stetson held a 29-23 lead as UCF held off four game points before falling 30-27. Tanya Jarvis and Chaz Arah each recorded three kills during the late run in game two. Game three was tight in the early going as the score was tied five times before Stetson could pull away. Up 11-10, the Hatters went on an 8-1 run to take a commanding 19-11 lead. The Golden Knights rallied and were able to cut the lead to 26-22, but a 4-0 Hatter run gave Stetson a 30-22 game three win to take the match.
Kira Smedley led the Hatters with 16 kills while DeeAnn Dempsey added 13 kills for Stetson. The duo each recorded 14 digs for the hosts. Lindsey Combs served up four aces and recorded four blocks.
Kim Clonan recorded 32 assists in the match and added five kills. Amanda Stoutjesdyk paced the Golden Knights with 11 kills while Tanya Jarvis added 10 kills for UCF. Chaz Arah recorded five blocks while Katie Kohnen recorded 16 digs.
UCF will be back in action again on Monday when they travel to Atlanta, Ga., to face Georgia Tech at 7:00 p.m. The Knights will return to Orlando to face 25th ranked Florida A&M on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in the UCF Arena.
