ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The month of March has seen the UCF baseball team hit its stride over the years, and the Knights (4-4) will look to do just that when they host Winthrop in the first meeting between the two schools. Action from the UCF baseball complex starts Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
In head coach Terry Rooney's tenure, UCF has compiled a 34-23 home record during the third month of the year, including a 22-7 mark over the past two seasons.
The promotions continue at the baseball complex with Friday night's weekend-opener serving as "Beach Knight." The first 400 students to enter will receive UCF sunglasses. Also, fans who attend Saturday's home finale for the men's basketball team against Memphis can use their ticket stub for free entry into the 4 p.m. baseball game.
The series-opener could turn into a pitcher's duel as ace RHP Ben Lively matches up with the Eagles' (3-5) Matt Pierpont. Lively has impressed in his previous two outings of 2013, notching a 2-0 record with a 0.69 ERA and 11 strikeouts. He will faceoff with Pierpont who owns a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings with 15 punchouts of his own.
Saturday's 4 p.m. contest will pit RHP Danny Davis (2-0) against Winthrop's Tyler Klitsch (0-1). In his last start against Texas Tech, Davis rode a wave of run support in his five innings of work with four strikeouts. Klitsch enters the game with a 4.22 ERA in 10 2/3 innings in a pair of starts.
The Knights are looking to bounce back after a pair of midweek losses to in-state rivals USF and Bethune-Cookman. Against the Bulls, UCF's late-inning rally of seven hits and four runs fell just shy in the 6-4 defeat. However, in its first road game of the year, nothing went the Knights' way in a 6-0 decision to the Wildcats.
As always, all UCF home contests can been seen live by logging onto CBS All-Access.
