DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF baseball team saw its 10-game win streak over Bethune-Cookman dating back to 2006 come to a halt Wednesday night from Jackie Robinson Ballpark as the Wildcats came through with the 6-0 victory.
The Knights (4-4) were unable to get the bats going, totaling just four hits to B-CU's 14. Senior Chris Taladay managed a pair of singles to up his team lead in base knocks to 12, and sophomore Tommy Williams extended his hit streak to seven games.
UCF will return home for a weekend set with Winthrop beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the two schools in program history.
In the third inning, the Wildcats (3-6) struck first in the game after converting a bases-loaded situation into one run on a sacrifice fly. Starter Eric Skoglund (0-2) responded by inducing a fly out to JoMarcos Woods in center to get out of the jam.
In the fifth, the Wildcats converted more opportunities into runs, laying down two successful bunt singles followed by an RBI base-knock into centerfield. After redshirt senior Chris Matulis was brought out of the pen facing no outs and the bases loaded, B-CU's Anthony Stokes sent a ball up the middle past the pitcher's out-stretched glove to plate two more and make it 4-0.
B-CU would make the Knights pay once again in the bottom of the sixth, plating a pair of two-out runs on a double and single to make it 10 hits through six frames.
The Knights were unable to get rallies going early in innings as each of their four hits all came with two outs.
Part of the reason for UCF's inability to execute at the plate was B-CU starter Montana Durapau. The junior was in the zone from the opening pitch, delivering his second-consecutive complete-game shutout while allowing just two Knights into scoring position all game.
