Golden Knights to Face Local Rival

ORLANDO - The UCF volleyball team will have a short road trip on Friday, heading to Daytona Beach to face local foe, Bethune-Cookman. The match, originally slated for Friday evening on the BCC campus, will be played at 2 p.m. at the ICI Center at Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach.

The Golden Knights (1-4) are looking to record their second consecutive victory. The host Wildcats are winless on the season, entering the contest with an 0-6 mark.

ABOUT UCF After three matches at the Diet Coke Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. last weekend, the Golden Knights return to the Sunshine State to face local foe Bethune-Cookman. In its final match at the event, UCF eased past North Dakota State, 3-0 (30-22, 30-28, 30-23). Maina Heming posted a double-double against the Bison with 12 kills and 12 digs. Katie Kohnen registered a match-high 21 digs.

On the year, Jana Mitchell leads the Golden Knights in kills, averaging 3.11 per game. Leah Alexander paces the squad with 7.85 assists per game while Katie Kohnen is averaging 3.89 digs, a mark that ranks eighth in Conference USA.

Head coach Meg Colado is in her seventh season at UCF. She has a 127-86 (.596) overall coaching mark and is 112-70 (.615) with the Golden Knights.

ABOUT BETHUNE-COOKMAN The Wildcats have played six matches on the year, all away from home. On Sept. 3, the team fell to Fairfield, 3-0 (30-23, 30-10, 30-19) in Boca Raton, Fla. Irie Cormier paces BCC, averaging 2.83 kills per game. Sarah Schmitt is averaging a team-best 5.83 assists per game and Ariane Guy leads the Wildcats in digs (3.20).

BCC is coached by Vanessa Cogswell. In her second year at the school, she is 14-17 with the Wildcats.

UCF AGAINST BETHUNE-COOKMAN All-time, UCF is 13-0 against the Wildcats, including a 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-17) victory in 2004 in Orlando. Bethune-Cookman is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Golden Knights are 36-3 all-time versus MEAC foes. Despite playing 13 matches all-time against the Wildcats, UCF has only played at Bethune-Cookman on one other occasion. The Golden Knights earned a 3-0 victory in 1987 in their only previous trip to Daytona Beach.

ON THE ROAD... AGAIN UCF will not enjoy any homecooking at the start of the season as the Golden Knights first seven matches are all away from Orlando. The squad makes its 2005 home debut on Sept. 20 against Florida Atlantic. All but four of the team's first seven matches will be played in the state of Florida.

UCF SIDELINES On Sept. 3 at the Diet Coke Classic in Minneapolis, Minn., 3,692 spectators watched the Golden Knights take on host Minnesota at the Sports Pavilion... At 6-2, junior college transfer Vesna Ukic is the tallest outside hitter to play at UCF under head coach Meg Colado... Kohnen and Jana Mitchell have been selected by the coaching staff as team captains.

ON DECK UCF plays the last of seven matches to start the season away from home against USF on Sept. 16... The Bulls hold a 40-22 edge in the all-time series. The squads last met a year ago in Orlando, with the Golden Knights taking a 3-1 (30-28, 28-30, 30-21, 32-30) win on Sept. 24... Under Meg Colado, UCF is 2-3 against the Bulls. The Golden Knights have won the last two series meetings
