ORLANDO, Fla (UCFKnights.com) – The No. 26 UCF women’s tennis team picked up their seventeenth win of the 2019 campaign, but for head coach Bryan Koniecko it was number 50 in his career at UCF.
“I have 50 wins because we have good players, that’s the bottom line,” said Koniecko, “Take a good coach and give him bad players and see how your team looks. We have really good players who have bought in. We talked about that over the weekend about all the people and alumni who have put in the work to get this team to where it is and to have the culture that we do. It goes way beyond me.”
Koniecko is the fastest coach to get to 50 wins in the UCF women’s tennis program and has a record of 50-16 in his three seasons here so far, good enough for a .758 winning percentage. On home court, UCF has gone 37-6 since Koniecko’s arrival, including a 14-0 mark this season.
Paired with Koniecko is assistant coach Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar who has also been a tremendous part of the program’s uprising.
“Cristiana and I came in here together and she’s been so loyal,” said Koniecko, “I remember sitting down on day one with her and asking what do we want this program to look like and what type of players do we want here? It’s nice to see it coming to fruition and year by year hopefully it’s getting better and better, not just in terms of wins and rankings. It doesn’t matter what the rankings are, it matters about the culture and how they fight for each other and everything else comes together after that. It’s nice to see what we talked about two and a half years ago still carrying on.
The Knights are currently on a 15-match winning streak and are on pace for one of their best seasons ever. The winning streak currently sits as the third best in program history, one match behind the 16-match winning streak set 22 years ago back in 1997.
Prior to UCF, Koniecko spent two seasons at Brown where he collected 24 wins as the men’s tennis coach. His next victory will be career win No. 75.
The Knights will hit the road and head down to FIU for a match on Sunday at 1 p.m. This will be UCF’s first match away from home since the ITA Kickoff Weekend on the final weekend of January.
