ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The American Athletic Conference announced the women's basketball scheduling model for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons and an 11-team conference championship bracket Thursday.
With the departure of Louisville and Rutgers from the conference, and the addition of Tulsa, Tulane, and East Carolina, The American is now comprised of 11 teams. The odd number of teams allows for each team to play eight of its 10 league opponents twice, and the other two just once to complete the 18-game schedule.
Each school will play the same home and home opponents over the course of two years in the current model. The single play opponents will switch sites in 2015-16.
The two teams that UCF will match up with once are UConn and ECU. The Knights will host the defending national champion Huskies for the second year in a row after topping the school attendance record in 2014. Meanwhile, UCF will rekindle its rivalry with former Conference USA foe ECU on the road in Greenville, N.C.
In addition to the conference pairings, more details surrounding the conference tournament bracket were revealed Thursday. As previously announced, the 2015 American Women's Basketball Championship will be played March 6-9 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
In opening round action on March 6, matchups between the No. 9 and No. 8 seeds, No. 10 and No. 7 seeds and No. 11 and No. 6 seeds will determine who advances to meet the first, second and third seeds, respectively, in Saturday's quarterfinals. In essence, the top five seeds in the championship will receive byes into Saturday's quarterfinal round.
More details surrounding UCF's conference and non-conference schedule will be released later this summer.
