ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Saturday was a bittersweet night for the UCF women's basketball team.
Zykira Lewis notched her seventh-straight game of double figures with a game-high 14 points and led the Knights (10-18, 3-14) in scoring for the fifth-straight game. Forward Brittni Montgomery was a force with her first game of double figures (12 points) since Dec. 13, and Jones grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds in her final home game.
UCF (10-18, 3-14) got after it early, jumping out on a 12-2 run that was capped when Montgomery swiped a steal and handed it off to Lewis, who dribbled coast to coast for a right-handed layup with 12:30 to go in the first half.
The Knights' standout freshman guard continued to find the bottom of the net, and at one point, scored three-consecutive buckets to take a 27-20 lead with 3:41 remaining. From there, however, Temple (13-15, 7-10) used a 7-0 run to tie the game at the break.
The Knights' offensive struggles continued into the opening minutes of the second half, but luckily so did the Owls'. Montgomery finally broke the drought at 15:01 with her light touch in the paint to tie the game back up at 29-29.
Temple eventually regained and increased its lead to nine, 46-37, but the Knights dug in. Stephanie Taylor made good on an and-1 opportunity after grabbing an offensive rebound. Djassi netted her first points of the game off a 3-pointer with 6:55 to go, and it couldn't have come at a better time, bringing her team within 46-45.
That momentum halted as the Owls rolled on an 8-2 run that dashed the Knights' hope of closing out its home finale with a win.
The Knights have their quickest turnaround of the season when they travel to Dallas for Monday's 8 p.m. ET matchup against SMU in the regular season finale.
