ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF women's basketball head coach Joi Williams will be spending most of her offseason traveling with the USA Basketball U19 Team in preparations for the World Championships in Chile in July. However, she won't have to travel too far for the team's first exhibition game which takes place June 5 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista against Brazil with tip-off set for 12:30 p.m.
The matchup will mark the beginning of ESPN RISE; a three-week sports festival (June 2-22) that celebrates female sports and will involve nearly 15,000 elite and recreational female athletes competing in basketball, gymnastics, softball, taekwondo and volleyball.
Williams is reuniting with coaches Jennifer Rizzotti and Sue Semrau along the sidelines for the second straight summer after the three guided the U18 Team to the 2010 FIBA Americas Championship in Colorado Springs, earning a berth at this year's World Championships. Rizzotti, who coaches at Hartford, was named the team's head coach with Williams and Florida State's Semrau tabbed as assistants.
Only U.S. citizens who are 19 years old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1992) are eligible for the 2011 USA Basketball Women's U19 World Championship Team.
Team trials to select finalists began Sunday, May 22 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center's Sports Center II and will continue through Wednesday, May 25. The announcement of up to 16 team finalists will be made on the final morning of trials.
