ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) - With a month before the start of the 2017 season, UCF volleyball head coach Todd Dagenais rounded out his staff with the hiring of Lucian Chenard and Carmelo Eleutiza. Chenard will serve as the director of technology, while Eleutiza joins the team as a volunteer assistant.
Since arriving in Orlando in the summer of 2009, Chenard has been an active member of the local volleyball community as a coach for Avalon Middle School, Inland Volleyball and MOJO Volleyball, as well as program coordinator at the YMCA. In 2015, Chenard guided his under-13 team from MOJO to a gold medal at the Canadian National Championship.
Outside of volleyball, Chenard has a background in information technology and spent the last six years as the Chief Information Officer for the Association for Biblical Higher Education, which serves more than 200 institutions across North America. His role primarily focused on performing IT evaluations, recommending changes to infrastructure and system implementation, which impacted more that 55,000 students and educators.
"With the addition to Kelly Palma as a full time director of operations, Lucian Chenard will completely upgrade and enhance the ways we use technology to help our players learn, make real time game decisions, and improve the efficiency in our office," Dagenais continued. "His passion for the sport, especially for UCF volleyball has been demonstrated for many years, now he finally gets to put his vast experience and technological skills to use for the program. Our program could not be any more fortunate that Lucian is willing to dedicate this much time and expertise to our continued growth."
A 28-year veteran of the coaching ranks, Eleutiza has spent the last five seasons as the head volleyball coach and facility manager at the Orlando Tampa Volleyball Academy. His club resume features 10 national championships and the 2016 AVCA Club Coach of the Year award. Over the last two year's Eleutiza's under-15 squad won three national titles behind a record of 169-9.
Eleutiza was named the 2011 and 2012 Coach of the Year during his time with Top Select Volleyball Academy. He also spent a season as the head volleyball and softball coach at Bluefield State College.
The native of Puerto Rico was the head coach of Toa Baja in the Women's Semi Professional League, recording 53 wins and 16 losses and earned the league title in 2004. In 1998 he served as the assistant coach for Capitan of Arceibo in the Women's Professional League.
"Melito is easily recognized as one of the finest club volleyball trainers in Florida and around the country," Dagenais said. "His teams continue to have success on the national level season after season. He will bring his training and game experience from working with the Puerto Rican national team, and from coaching his own teams to national championships. He has already had a big part of training incoming freshman Ann-Marie Watson, and he will have an energetic, positive impact on the training and development of our entire roster."
The Knights open the 2017 season on Aug. 25 on the road at Northern Colorado, before opening up at home with the Holiday Inn Express UCF Challenge on Sept. 15 at The Venue.
