ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The 2016 UCF Volleyball schedule, which was released on Tuesday, is set to be one of the program's most competitive schedules yet.

"We have packed a very talented and challenging schedule for our team this year. Many of the younger players will not have seen the level of competition they will see this fall," head coach Todd Dagenais said.

The Knights open the 2016 campaign with the Holiday Inn Express/UCF Invitational on Aug. 26-27. UCF welcomes Stony Brook, Kent State, Florida State and Stetson for the two-day tournament at The Venue at UCF.

"Opening weekend will be highlighted by a visit from Florida State. It will be the first time we have had a potential Top 10-level team on our campus since Stanford back in 2008," Dagenais noted. "Kent State, Stetson, and Stony Brook are all teams who have been on a consistent rise. They will each provide a nice opening weekend test."

UCF makes its first road trip of the season during the second weekend, heading to Carbondale, Ill., for the Southern Illinois Invitational. The Black and Gold will take on Northern Arizona, Western Michigan and the host Salukis during the two-day tournament.

The Knights return to The Venue for the three-day Holiday Inn Express/UCF Classic, which runs Sept. 9-11. UCF opens the tournament with games against FAU and LSU on Sept. 9 and face Seattle on Sept. 11.

Non-conference action concludes with the Holiday Inn Express/UCF Challenge. UCF faces UNC-Asheville and Central Arkansas on Sept. 16 and Central Michigan on Sept. 17.

"We wrap up the pre-season schedule with a tough challenge," Dagenais said. "Central Michigan has a new coach from Michigan State, and many have credited him with much of the success MSU had over the past several years. They will be a very different team than the one we beat two years ago. UNC Asheville is a team we haven't had much history with, but we expect them to be well-trained, and well-rounded. Finally, Central Arkansas is likely to be the best team in the event. They have continued to improve, and constantly remain a team who will either win their conference, or be square in position for an at-large bid if they don't."

UCF opens American Athletic Conference play at home for the second consecutive season. The Knights welcome USF on Sept. 21 and host Memphis on Sept. 23. The Black and Gold face their first conference opponent on the road on Sept. 30, traveling to Greenville, N.C., to face East Carolina.

The Knights play eight of the first 12 league matches at home. The conference schedule follows a 20-match, double-round robin setup.

"All in all, this is the most competitive schedule we have ever put together, but I expect to be a team that is well prepared heading into the season, and a team that is very well prepared heading into the conference schedule," Dagenais said.

The Holiday Inn Orlando East UCF Area is the presenting sponsor and official team hotel of UCF Volleyball.
