ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Romario Williams has heated up as the summer has progressed and is currently helping Jamaica make a run in the Gold Cup. The former Knight striker has tallied two goals for the national team after being named the USL Player of the Month for June.
The Portmore, Jamaica, native netted the game-winning goal in the 2-1 Jamaica victory over Canada on July 20. The beautiful strike in the 49th minute curled into the top corner of the far side of the net. It was his second career international marker, which propelled Jamaica into a semifinal matchup with Mexico at the Rose Bowl on Sunday.

"I have a lot of confidence in my ability. I know what I'm capable of as a player, whether it's in MLS, whether it's in USL, whether it's for the Jamaican national team," said Williams in an interview with MLS.com. "As a player, all you want is a chance to show what you can do and prove your worth, and for me, it's been a good year so far. I've been getting a lot of support from my teammates."

His first goal in the Gold Cup came to close out group play against Curacao on July 9. Williams put the Reggae Boyz up 1-0 on a rising strike between the goalkeeper and near post in the 58th minute. Jamaica went on to secure a berth in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 win.

Heading into the Gold Cup, Williams knew that there was a lot at stake after Jamaica made an amazing run to the finals and finished runner up in the 2015 edition of the tournament.

"We are not trying to live the past. We have a motivated group," said Williams in a video uploaded by @GoldCup. "The guys have been putting in a lot of work for the past couple of weeks. We want to make the nation proud after not being able to advance to the final stages of the World Cup qualifier."

Prior to joining the national team, Williams has been tearing up the USL, accumulating a league-best 14 goals for the first-place Charleston Battery.

He was tabbed as the USL Player of the Month for June in a weighted poll that included input from fans, media and the league office. Williams tallied five goals in four games for the undefeated Battery in the four-game stretch. A pair of braces were netted against Louisville City FC and Toronto FC II.

"It's always good to see your hard work paying off and being recognized," said Williams. "There are a lot of great players in this league doing well week in and week out. I couldn't have done it without the help of my coaching staff, family, and most importantly my teammates, who push me every single day to be the best player I can."

Williams will rejoin the Battery after the Gold Cup. The Battery have 14 matches before the regular season ends on Oct. 15. The top eight finishers in each conference qualify for the playoffs.
