ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - With the 2012 season in the books for the UCF baseball team, seventeen student-athletes will venture across the nation to sharpen their skills in various collegiate summer leagues.
For the Knights competing in the wood-bat leagues, some will play as close as 20 miles to campus (Sanford River Rats) while the duo of Jimmy Reed and Chris Taladay will venture some 4,681 miles to Palmer, Alaska, to play for the Mat-Su Miners in the Alaska Baseball League.
Most Knights will make their way up the East Coast, including a trio of UCF pitchers, whom will spend the summer in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Righties Ben Lively and Garrett Nuss and lefty Eric Skoglund begin their time in the Cape on June 14 with both Nuss and Skoglund pitching for the Harwich Mariners and Lively representing the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
Last year, both Lively and Nuss earned high praise from Baseball America when they were ranked as top-10 prospects in their respective summer leagues.
UCF closed out 2012 with 45 wins for the first time since 2004, a program-record 16 wins in Conference USA and the best winning percentage on the road in the country (83.3%).
