ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - With two midweek wins under its belt, the No. 13 UCF baseball team ventures on the road to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a weekend series at Southern Miss beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. EDT. The two squads will tango once again on Saturday at 4 p.m. and wrap up the three-game set Sunday at 12:30.
The Knights (28-7, 7-2) and Golden Eagles (19-13, 3-3) have had some interesting weekend battles the past two years. In 2010, UCF swept USM on the road in a series that featured two one-run games. Last year, the Golden Eagles returned the favor in Orlando with a sweep of their own.
Life on the road has been good to the Knights this year as the team has compiled a 7-1 record, including a 5-0 road trip that featured wins at Florida Atlantic, a series sweep at Houston and a 4-1 triumph at No. 7 Miami.
Head coach Terry Rooney will stick with the same weekend rotation that has produced a 5-1 record the past two weeks. Brian Adkins (2-1, 4.23 ERA) will get the nod Friday, followed by Chris Matulis (4-0, 2.36 ERA) on Saturday and Ray Hanson (2-1, 2.79 ERA) on Sunday.
UCF, tied for second in the nation with 28 wins, improved its record this week by outscoring Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman by a combined score of 22-5. The Knights began the week with a NCAA RPI rating at No. 15 and appear atop many statistical categories in C-USA, including hits (357), RBI (233), runs scored (247) and ERA (2.86).
