ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Calling former UCF volleyball players!
Head coach Todd Dagenais is inviting players from every generation to the UCF Volleyball Alumnae Weekend on Nov. 9 and 10. This action-packed weekend will feature the Knights’ matchup against Cincinnati on Friday, complete with a Ring of Honor induction for Tyra Harper and honoring the 40th anniversary of the national championship team.
The Knights will also celebrate the life of Tess Nelson Marini, a former Knight who passed away earlier this year.
“This is the perfect opportunity for us to cement the long-term legacy of our program, dating back to its inception,” Dagenais said. “This all-generation reunion will allow us to welcome back every player who has worn the black and gold on the volleyball court. It gives us a special opportunity to remember the greatest moment in our program’s history with the 40th anniversary of the AIAW National Championship. It gives us an opportunity to induct one of the most accomplished players in our history, when we drop a banner for Tyra Harper. It gives us a moment to pause and remember Tess Nelson and recognize her family.
“More importantly, it brings us together as a family that spans many decades and allows us to connect again. It’s important that as a fairly young program, compared to many across the country, that we don’t lose sight of where we came from, who has had an impact and we are where we are because of many people before us.”
The weekend will start when the Knights take on Cincinnati in a key American Athletic Conference clash, which will be free admission. After the match, UCF will host an alumnae social with Coach Dagenais and the 2018 squad. On Saturday, former players are invited to the tailgate with Varsity Knights. The weekend wraps up with the UCF Football game against Navy. Alumnae that register for the weekend will be able to purchase tickets to the football game.
Harper, the 2018 Ring of Honor inductee, was one of the best players ever to don the Black and Gold. A four-year starter form 1994 to 1997, she was an AVCA First Team All-Region selection, an Atlantic Sun Player of the Year in 1997 and a three-time all-conference team member. She currently holds the record for solo blocks in a match with seven and blocks per set in a season with 1.39 as a senior in 1997, as well as block solos and total blocks for a career with 156 and 475, respectively. Harper ranks seventh in career matches played at 151, second in kills with 1,932, third in attack percentage at .336 (min. 1,500 kills) and fourth in service aces with 151.
The Knights will also honor the 1978 AIAW National Championship team that is celebrating its 40th anniversary. UCF posted a perfect 55-0 record to lift the program’s lone national title. Head coach Lucy McDaniel and standout player Laura Smith were inducted into the Ring of Honor last fall.
