ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF Volleyball team was honored twice by Conference USA Tuesday afternoon as sophomores Marie Reiterova and DeLaina Sarden were named Setter and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the league offices for their stellar performances in conference play last weekend.
"I'm glad we had the success this weekend that would allow our program to earn two of the three Conference USA awards," head coach Todd Dagenais said. "We circled this past weekend on the calendar as one of those weekends that could define our season and to come out of it 2-0 with such a great team effort was really important to set up our stretch run."
"To get these two awards means that Marie is continuing to have success leading our offense," Dagenais continued. "And DeLaina continues to mature into the huge force that we always knew that she would be for our program now and in the future."
These are the 13th and 14th player of the week awards that UCF has received from C-USA since joining the league in 2005.
The duo helped UCF to a 2-0 record this past weekend and it swept East Carolina on Friday night and topped Marshall, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.
For Reiterova, this is the second time in as many weeks the sophomore has won setter of the week honors. She totaled 77 assists (11.00 per set), 20 digs and chipped in with six block assists. She helped the Knights attain a league-best attack percentage of .336 for the weekend, including a season-high .379 against Marshall.
Sarden earned her first C-USA Defensive Player of the Week Award after totaling 12 combined blocks in just seven sets over the two matches. Backed by Sarden's defense, the Knights also held their opponents to a league-low .084 attack percentage for the week. The talented middle blocker also chipped in offensively with 18 kills while hitting a team-best .424. Sarden became the second player in program history to earn defensive recognition, as senior libero Meredith Murphy received the award two weeks ago.
