GAINESVILLE, Fla. ( - After the UCF Softball team tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead going to the seventh inning, Stetson rallied to knot the opening game of the NCAA Gainesville Regional at four on Friday. The Hatters scored twice in the eighth inning on RBI singles by Jessie Tenbroeck and Chrissy Morello to seal the 6-4 victory at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

UCF (41-71) moves on to face Florida A&M on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., while Stetson (39-12) plays the Florida at 1 p.m.

Meredith Owen (27-7), who hit a solo home run to jumpstart the Hatters offense in the sixth, notched the victory in the circle and fanned five in the complete game. UCF scored four earned runs off the righty, the most given up this season.

The Knights were one out away from clinching the victory with a 4-3 advantage in the top of seventh before Jessica Griffin singled up the middle to score Demi Meza, who came through with a two-run base knock to right center.

Sophomore catcher Kalyn Cenal led the Knights offense with run-scoring singles in the fourth and sixth innings. A two-hit game was also notched by junior second baseman Kahley Novak.

Tagged with the loss was sophomore pitcher Shelby Turnier (19-6), who tossed the first four innings before being relieved and reentering the game in the eighth. Stetson took advantage of seven walks during the game.

Three innings of relief were provided by junior Mackenzie Audas, who allowed the Hatters to tie the game in the seventh.

After Turnier left the bases loaded in the first inning by striking out the side, Novak started off with a single up the middle and stole second. The Clermont native scored on a base hit to right by junior third baseman Farrah Sullivan to give UCF a 1-0 lead.

The Hatters threatened in the fourth on singles by Owen and Courtney Brandt, but Turnier was able to end the frame with a fly out to center.

A leadoff walk drawn by sophomore designated player Jessica Ujvari began the bottom half. Freshman pinch runner Andrea Neswiacheny moved to second on a ground out and scored on a single by Cenal down the left field line, 2-0.

After the Owen homer to start the sixth, the Knights responded as Je. Ujvari doubled to left center and moved to third on a sac bunt from sophomore outfielder Mariah Garcia. Back-to-back RBI singles from sophomore first baseman Samantha McCloskey and Cenal increased the advantage to 4-1.
