UCF Tops UConn, 5-3

STORRS, Conn. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women’s soccer team swept its opening weekend of American Athletic Conference action with a 5-3 win at Connecticut on Sunday afternoon.

The Knights (5-3-1, 2-0 The American) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over UConn (2-11, 0-4 The American). The Huskies responded to cut UCF’s lead in half, 4-2, going into halftime. UConn pulled within a goal, 4-3, in the 57th minute. Stefanie Sanders recorded the final goal of the contest in the 65th minute for her second hat trick of the season.

Hats Off To Sanders

  • For the second time in the span of three games, Stefanie Sanders scored three goals for a hat trick.
  • The Hamburg, Germany, native doubled UCF’s lead, collecting a goal kick from the UConn keeper to make it a 3-0 game in the 16th minute.
  • The sophomore forward wasted little time after fellow German Dina Orschmann made it a 3-0 game in the 24th minute. Sanders scored 13 seconds later to put the Knights ahead 4-0 in the contest.
  • With her marker in the 57th minute, Sanders becomes the sixth Knight to record a pair of hat tricks in a season, joining Laura Dryden (1982), Danielle Thomas (1986), Sandy Carter (1986), Kelly Kochevar (1991, 1994) and Michelle Anderson (2000).

 Sunday Success In Storrs

  • UCF collected its first victory at Connecticut under head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak.
  • The five goals marks the most for the Knights in the series history, and is ties the season-high for the Black and Gold in 2018.
  • UCF pulled closer to the Huskies in the all-time series. UConn holds a 6-5 advantage.

NEXT UP
The Knights return to the UCF Soccer Complex for a pair of American Athletic Conference contests. UCF will host ECU on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. Oct. 7 matchup against Cincinnati.
