CORAL GABLES, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women’s soccer team turned up its intensity in the second half in a 2-0 victory over Miami at Cobb Stadium on Sunday evening.

UCF (1-2-0) started slowly against Miami (3-3-0), but went to work in the second 45 minutes to earn the victory.. Freshman Kristen Scott played a part in both goals, drawing the foul to set up the penalty kick. Junior Zandy Soree converted from the spot in the 70th minute to put the Knights up 1-0.

With the seconds ticking down, the Black and Gold doubled the score as sophomore Stefanie Sanders found Scott on the breakaway.

“(We’re) happy to be leaving Miami tonight with a big (win),” UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. “It really was a tale of two halves. In the first half, we didn’t look like ourselves. We didn’t have the work ethic that we wanted, or even the competitiveness. We had a little chat at halftime. Everyone came out and did the work and that resulted in two goals.”

Tale of Two Halves

  • After taking just two shots in the first half, the UCF offense found its rhythm in the second period.
  • The Knights out-shot the Hurricanes 9-2 in the second half and scored both of its goals in the second 45 minutes.
  • UCF spread the scoring wealth, with Zandy Soree tallying her second goal of the season and Kristen Scott registering her first collegiate goal.
  • Scott, who came off the bench in the second half, drew the foul in the box to set up the penalty kick for Soree.

Vera With The Good Hands

  • Senior goalkeeper Vera Varis showed her skill set in the victory.
  • Despite the scoresheet showing just four saves for the Vantaa, Finland native, Varis snatched several balls before Miami was able to put them on frame.
  • Varis and the UCF defense limited Miami to just five shots in the contest.

The Knights head to Maryland for a 7 p.m. contest on Sept. 6. The game will stream on BTN2Go.
