ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – As the UCF women’s soccer team opens training, a pair of Knights are preparing to represent Germany at the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Dina Orschmann and Stefanie Sanders were selected to the German U20 squad, which begins competition on Aug. 6.
A native of Berlin, Orschmann spent the 2017 preseason helping Germany to the semifinals of the Women’s U19 Championships in Northern Ireland. In addition to her U19 experience, she previously played with the U20 squad in 2016 and the U17 team in 2015.
Sanders has represented her country with 24 appearances between the U17, U19 and U20 squads. In 2015, the Hamburg native tallied 10 goals alongside Orschmann to help the German U17 squad to the semifinals of the UEFA U17 Championship.
The duo made an immediate impact for the Knights last fall. In just her second game with the Black and Gold, Orschmann pulled UCF even with then-No. 4 UNC in the 13th minute and the Knights would go on to defeat the Tar Heels for the first time in the regular season. The third-leading scorer – and UCF’s top returner in 2018, Orschmann tallied 20 points on six goals and eight assists en route to the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year honors.
Missing the first seven matches of the season due to injury, Sanders quickly made up ground upon her return. She tallied four goals in 11 matches, which ranked fourth on the team. Helping the Knights to The American regular season title, she earned a spot on the league’s all-rookie team.
UCF opened its season on Friday morning with the first of two training sessions. The Knights will host Wyoming in an exhibition contest on Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. and officially kick off the 2018 campaign on Aug. 19 when they welcome FGCU to the UCF Soccer Complex.
