Decamps Falls in First Round of NCAA Singles

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Sophomore No. 43 Gabriel Decamps wound up having to retire from his first-round matchup with No. 53 Joseph Guillin in the NCAA Singles Championships. Guillin will advance, winning the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 2-0 via retirement.

Decamps controlled the first set, pulling out to a commanding 4-1 lead early on. Decamps would eventually pick up the 6-3 victory in the first set as he controlled the pace of play.

The second set was much closer. Guillin earned his way to a 3-1 lead in the early going but Decamps fought back. The score would eventually be tied at 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 before Guillin won the tiebreaker 7-4 to even the match at one set apiece.

In the first game of the third set, Decamps went down with an injury. He received medical attention and attempted to continue in the match. After the conclusion of the second game in the final frame, Decamps decided that it was necessary for him to retire. He’ll finish his 2018-2019 campaign with an 18-10 mark. He went 6-9 in the spring season.
